One figure, taken apart
Prices
Every price here reads from $N per person, based on two sharing, land only, with the share of nights it buys beside it. This page takes one of them apart line by line and names the counter where each excluded thing is actually paid for.
The four parts of every figure on this site
- from
- the lowest this office has recently arranged that trip for, in the season its own page names. It opens a conversation about your dates. It does not describe them
- $N
- what the operating companies charge for the things that trip's page lists as bought. Nothing from this office is inside it
- per person
- one head. Not a couple and not a room
- based on two sharing
- a room is priced as a room. Put one person in it and the figure per head rises, on some trips by half again
And a fifth thing, which is this site's own: the share of the nights the figure buys. From $490 that buys two nights of fourteen and from $1,090 that buys seven of seven are not comparable, and the line beside each price is where you see it.
The build-up of one trip
Andalusia, ten nights, nights bought.
| Line | What it buys | Fixed when? | Running |
|---|---|---|---|
| Three hotels, ten nights | the rooms and the city taxes | at deposit | 940 |
| Breakfast at all three | included in those rates rather than added | at deposit | 1,040 |
| Airport transfer, arrival only | one car, one direction | yes | 1,105 |
| The written itinerary | addresses in Spanish, station walks, references | no charge | 1,105 |
| This office's fee | there is none, on any trip | none | 1,105 |
| Rounding to the published figure | from $1,180 | ||
| The flight | quoted separately, and it moves the day you ask | never, until ticketed | not in the figure |
The gap between 1,105 and the published figure is the seasonal range: the published from is the lowest we have arranged, and most weeks sit above it. We would rather show that gap than hide it.
Not on this bill, and the counter where each is paid
- Travel insurance
- the insurer, whose certificate is the document that matters
- Passport and any entry fee
- the issuing authority. This office neither sells nor advises on either
- Meals not listed on the trip page
- the restaurant
- Gratuities, where they are customary
- the ship's account, daily, and effectively compulsory
- Excursions
- the operator's desk on the ground, usually cheaper there than here
- Anything you spend once you are there
- your own statement
Who takes your payment, and why no number is printed
Whoever runs your trip takes it. This office adds no booking fee of its own to their charge, and it never receives the money at all: no page here carries a card field, there is no account to open and no balance to hold.
The four states that keep a register of travel sellers are California, Florida, Hawaii and Washington State, and their registers exist because some agencies hold client money. This one does not hold any, is on none of those lists, and therefore has no number to print. Printing one anyway is the offence; having none is not.
What moves, and what does not
- Airfare
- moves the day you ask, not the day you fly. The most volatile thing in travel and neither of us controls it
- Rooms
- move with the season and with how full a property is at the moment we ask
- Transfers
- barely move. Distance and shared-or-private, and it is usually the smallest line
- Government and port charges
- do not move. Nobody discounts a government
- The band
- moves everything. The same money buys a different share of the trip in each of the four
The two dates
- Deposit date
- set by the operating company. Missing it releases the booking and the price is re-quoted at whatever is available that day
- Balance date
- set by the operating company. Missing it is read as your cancellation, and it is the most expensive mistake available on this page. It goes in your document in bold
If you find it cheaper
Send us the page. We will tell you whether it is the same thing. It usually is not, because the difference is normally the transfers, the room category or the insurance. If it is the same thing, book it there.
